Colour, lighting and uncertainty

Colour is the thing people most often misread from a photo, and the thing a photo is least able to prove. A quality-check picture is taken under whatever light was on hand and viewed on whatever screen you happen to own — two variables you don't control and can't see.

Why the colour on your screen isn't the colour

  • Light temperature. Warm indoor light pushes colours toward yellow and orange; cool or fluorescent light pushes them toward blue. The same grey hoodie can look beige in one photo and slate in another.
  • White balance. Cameras and phones guess a neutral point and adjust everything around it. A wrong guess tints the whole frame.
  • Your display. Screens vary in brightness, contrast and calibration. A colour that looks right to the photographer can look different to you.

What you can and can't conclude

You can read relative differences within a single well-lit photo: this panel is darker than that one, the print is clearly red rather than maroon, two pieces in the same frame don't match. You can't responsibly read an exact shade, a precise colour difference, or a subtle "is this the right green" from one uncalibrated image. Treat any colour judgement as an estimate with a margin.

Don't over-read colour

Avoid precise conclusions like "this is two shades too light" from a photo alone. There is no calibration reference in the frame, so the margin of error is real. Note the doubt instead of resolving it falsely.

Narrowing the doubt

  • Compare photos taken under different light in the same set; a colour that stays stable across them is more trustworthy.
  • Look for a neutral reference in the frame — white paper, a familiar object — and read the colour relative to it.
  • If colour is the deciding factor, ask for a photo in daylight against a plain white background. That single request removes most of the uncertainty.
